2012 Climate Talks and Calendar

 

 

UNFCCC logoBonn, Germany Intercessional May 14-25, 2012

The 36th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), the fifteenth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), the seventeenth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) and the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) will take place concurrently from 14 to 25 May. All sessions will be held at the Maritim Hotel in Bonn.

June 2012: G-20 Summit, Mexico

Mexico will host the seventh meeting of the G-20 heads of government in a series of on-going discussions about financial markets and the world economy. Mexico believes the forum can better represent developing countries in both vision and policy. Under the leadership of President Felipe Calderon, we can expect that Mexico will seek to expand the scope of the G-20’s development and climate focus.

June 20-22, 2012: Earth Summit (Rio +20), Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Earth Summit 2012 will focus on the green economy and an institutional framework for sustainable development. This 20th anniversary meeting will seek renewed political commitment to sustainable development, assess progress toward goals, and address new and emerging challenges.


Durban Thumbnail Concluded: Durban Climate Talks, December 2011

From November 28th through December 11th 2011, representatives from around the world met to negotiate a global agreement to limit greenhouse gases in Durban, South Africa at the U.N’s 17th Conference of the Parties. The talks renewed the Kyoto Protocol in principle and a new process called the Durban Platform for Enhanced Cooperation (DPEC) was forged. Read more »

 

Panama City, Panama Intercessional 2011

Work for the third part of AWG-KP 16 were the same as for the June session, with Parties continuing to engage in the policy discussion in the contact group and in the work on the more specific issues in the spin-off groups. The Chair of the AWG-KP will prepare a scenario note in a timely manner before the third part of the session. Work for the AWG-LCA 14 will be similar to that for the June session, with Parties continuing their work on all agenda items in informal groups under the contact group. As agreed at the June session, this work will also take into account recommendations made at the session for focused in-depth discussion that would facilitate progress, in particular on technical issues.

June 6-17 the second UNFCCC Intersessional Meeting in Bonn, Germany agenda included the 34th sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), as well as meetings of the Ad Hoc Working Groups.

The first UNFCCC meeting of 2011 took place in Bangkok Sunday, 3 April through Friday, 8 April 2011. The meeting featured workshops requested by the member countries in Cancun that spurred discussion of emission reduction plans of industrialized countries and the emission efforts of developing countries as well as exploring opportunities for greater cooperation to deploy clean technology solutions.
