We Must Lead on Climate Change

Fighting climate change is a matter of national security, says bipartisan group of leaders

The U.S. must take action on climate change for the security of our country – Republican and Democratic leaders have signed on to a statement to that effect through the Partnership for a Secure America.

Signatories include Howard Baker, former U.S. Senator (R-Tennessee); Warren Christopher, former Secretary of State; Anthony Lake, former National Security Advisor; Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of NJ; Sam Nunn, former U.S. Senator (D-Georgia).

They say that climate change is a national security issue, and that politicians in Washington must develop a comprehensive and bipartisan plan to address our role in climate change and also help less developed countries adapt to a changed climate. That will help avoid future humanitarian disasters and political instability that could threaten the security of the U.S.

But most importantly, these leaders say we must find a way to transcend the many political issues that divide us so we can come up with a unified plan of action.
