24 New US Coal-Plants Killed in 2008
In 2008, plans for 24 coal-fired power plants were defeated or abandoned. In 2001 the Bush-Cheney Energy Plan included building over 150 new coal-fired power plants. Since then, 82 of these proposals have been defeated or abandoned, and dozens more have been delayed failing to meet minimum pollution standards. Public opposition, rising costs, increasing financial risks, and concerns over future carbon regulations all played a significant role in shifting investments away from coal and into clean energy technologies.
