California Low-Carbon Fuel Standard Could Drop Transport Emissions 10% by 2020
The California Air Resources Board has drafted a low-carbon fuel standard that would lower greenhouse gas emissions from the state's fuel 10 percent by 2020. The measure would require a variety of alternative fuels to be in use by 2020, such as electricity, hydrogen and certain biofuels. Some biofuels, such as corn ethanol, were excluded because the Board examined the greenhouse gas emissions from every stage of fuel production. Using these criteria, Midwest corn ethanol produces more emissions than regular gasoline does. Ethanol producers disputed the findings, arguing that the Board didn't take into account land use effects of oil and gas production. Read more at San Francisco Chronicle
