Clinton to Face Climate Change Challenges at State Dept

Hillary Clinton is expected to face pointed questions on how she'll address the global climate change crisis as the Senate Relations Committee considers her nomination for Secretary of State. Clinton has already indicated that she plans to expand the State Departments role in global economic affairs and strengthen its role in a range of diplomatic arenas, which could be a good sign for global warming negotiations, which will be intimately tied to trade, global markets, agriculture and a range of other financially sensitive areas. Clinton would also need to work closely with EPA and White House leadership on crafting domestic climate change policy, which will be a key first step in securing a global agreement. Advocates want to avoid the mistakes made during the Bill Clinton administration, during which the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated but Congress ultimately failed to ratify.
