EU Climate Package Agreed
The EU package, agreed by the 27 EU member nations on Friday, December 12, included rules to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020, draw 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources and reduce energy consumption by 20 percent. However, the final package was criticized for not including an automatic increase to 30% reductions if a global deal is agreed, allowing for large amounts of CDM offsets and moving away from auctioning emissions credits to free allocations associated with windfall profits for polluters.
