Gore Testifies Before Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Al Gore testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last Wednesday to a warm audience from both sides of the aisle. That committee chairman John Kerry chose global warming as the subject of his first hearing sends a signal that Obama takes the issue seriously. "Climate change will be increasingly central to our foreign policy," said Sen. Kerry. Even Senator Corker, a Republican, seemed receptive to progress on climate. "We are firing with real bullets now," said Corker. "My sense is, this year something will really occur." During his testimony, Gore went through a shorter version of his famous slide show, noting that emissions over the past few years are exceeding the worst-case scenarios from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. When asked for recommendations, Gore urged the committee to support President Obama's recovery package and to pass cap-and-trade legislation ahead of the UN conference in Copenhagen this December.
