International Renewable Energy Agency Founded in Germany
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was officially launched last Monday in Bonn, Germany. 75 nations were represented at the event and signed on to the Agency's founding treaty-the United States not among them. IRENA aims to becoming the main driving force in promoting rapid transition towards the widespread adoption of renewable energy on a global scale, facilitating "reliable data on the potential of renewable energy, best practices, effective financial mechanisms, and state-of-the-art technological expertise. The founders see IRENA as a counter balance to the International Energy Agency (IEA), which they say has not done enough to promote alternative energy. Read more at the Guardian
