Pelosi Urges White House to Put Conditions on Money for Automakers
A bailout package for the domestic automakers passed the House last week but failed in the Senate. The White House then floated the idea that it would be willing to use money from the financial industry bailout to provide money for the auto industry. But three days later, the White House has yet to release the cash. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged the White House to make any Detroit bailout package contingent on automakers meeting essentially the same conditions -- including fuel-efficiency directives -- included in legislation that passed the House last week. Media reports put the amount of money the White House could provide to automakers at between 10 billion and $40 billion. For more information, see Washington Post.
