Some States Choosing Economy over Environmental Regulation

With states facing unprecedented budget shortfalls amid a deepening recession, some are considering rolling back environmental regulation to create jobs and boost revenue:

  • In Montana, a bill would exempt stimulus funds from the state's environmental policies
  • In California, environmental laws were relaxed for road and construction projects
  • Utah is considering taking money for storing nuclear waste

But the move to weaken environmental policies isn't gaining steam everywhere. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm wants to tighten regulation on coal-fired power plants, and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sibelius has promised to veto proposed legislation that would pave the way for new coal-fired power plants in the state.  Read more at AP
