White House Wants Single, Unified Policy on Car Emissions

The EPA and Transportation Department are working together to craft a single US policy for regulating both emissions and mileage standards, said Carol Browner last week. "We are obviously in difficult times in terms of the restructuring that is going on with some of the companies, but the hope is that we will come to a unified approach for the next generation of vehicles," said Browner. The move is backed by auto manufactures and some environmentalists. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers has said a patchwork of state standards would cost billions of dollars. Greg Martin, General Motors' Washington spokesman, said automakers and consumers are seeking "certainty and consistency" when it comes to fuel efficiency. Read more at Washington Post
