Climate and Energy Resources

Jobs

Michigan's clean energy industries are a bright spot in the economy (job growth of 10.7%) even while the state suffers record job losses in other sectors. A $150 billion clean energy investment across the country would bring 54,000 jobs and about $4.8 billion investment to the state, reducing unemployment by 1.1 percent.

Opportunity

Michigan could realize as many as 8,549 jobs manufacturing wind turbines and $2.85 billion investment in the wind industry alone if 50,000 MW of new wind energy is created at the national level. The state has already attracted $55 million in clean tech venture capital in the past three years.

Cut Costs

The average family in Michigan would save $7.94 per month on their energy bills and $15.00 per month on vehicle fuel costs if the American Clean Energy and Security Act was enacted.

Climate Consequences

Temperatures are expected to rise 5 degrees F by 2060. Water levels in the Great Lakes will plummet as much as 8 feet by the end of the century, resulting in an estimated 13 to 29 percent increase in shipping costs. Increased soil erosion resulting in loss of topsoil will lose Michigan's agricultural industry as much as $20.7 million annually.

State Action

While Congress debates climate and energy legislation on the Hill, Michigan has written a state climate action plan and has partnered with 10 other states to form the Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Accord to combat the dual threats of climate change and energy security.
