US Climate Action Network's (USCAN) MISSION IS TO BUILD TRUST AND ALIGNMENTS AMONG MEMBERS TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE IN A JUST AND EQUITABLE WAY.
A node of Climate Action Network (CAN) a global network comprising of more than 1,900 civil society organizations, the US Climate Action Network (USCAN) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States. USCAN brings together a diverse array of over 190 U.S. based organizations working towards addressing the climate crisis in a just and equitable way. By uniting these diverse voices, USCAN aims to create a powerful collective force advocating for bold and urgent climate action at all levels of government. This includes engaging with policymakers, raising public awareness, and catalyzing grassroots efforts to push for transformative change.
USCAN’s overarching goal is to bring an end to the era of fossil fuels, advocating for a transition to renewable energy sources that are restorative and just. In doing so, USCAN remains particularly focused on addressing the needs of the most vulnerable populations who are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. This commitment includes ensuring that systematically marginalized communities have a seat at the table in discussions about climate policies and that their deep knowledge and voices are heard and prioritized in the decision-making process.
What We Do
Campaigns
The USCAN campaign definition, developed by its members, describes a campaign as a strategic approach that utilizes healing-centered engagement to enact specific social, political, or economic changes aimed at advancing racial and economic justice while addressing the needs of marginalized communities.
Building Trust & Alignments
Trust and alignments among such a varied membership necessitates the creation of spaces, systems, and processes dedicated to relationship building, collaboration, training, and restorative justice. In a network as extensive and diverse as USCAN, ongoing investment in relationship building is crucial.
Catalyzing Grants
The member-led Catalyzing Grants program is a participatory re-granting initiative that began in 2017 and continues to successfully redirect funding to grassroots organizations. USCAN introduced a new grant type in 2023 called the Visionary Grant, which focuses on supporting Black, Brown, and Indigenous leadership.
International Climate Policy
USCAN, accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), provides access and supports a members delegation to advocate for science-based climate agreements that prioritize community-driven initiatives and human rights.
Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (JEDI)
In 2018, the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee was established to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment within the organization. Since its inception, USCAN has continued to grow and deepen its commitment to the JEDI statement created by its members, along with the Jemez Principles and Environmental Justice Principles. This ongoing dedication is guided by a permanent committee composed of members who are passionate about promoting social justice and environmental equity.
