Press Briefing: U.S. Climate Leaders on Midterm Election Results, COP31, and the Fight for Climate Justice

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Right on the heels of Election Day, and with the annual UNl climate negotiations (COP31) set to begin in Antalya, Türkiye on November 9, U.S. climate and frontline leaders will discuss the path forward for U.S. climate action and potential implications for global climate action. Under the Trump administration, the U.S. has exited the bedrock UN Framework Convention on Climate Change as well as the Paris Agreement. The administration’s illegal war against Iran, relentless attacks on climate and clean energy policies, and unabated and reckless expansion of fossil fuels are especially dangerous with the world on course to overshoot 1.5°C of global warming, and costly and deadly climate impacts worsening globally.

Yet, despite the Trump administration’s best efforts to derail progress and gut bedrock environmental protections, there is a growing grassroots movement fighting back.

Panelists will reflect on what the midterm election results signify and share critical calls to action for U.S. policymakers which will have global ramifications. These include: rejecting the Senate permitting “reform” bill (also known as BAAJA), making fossil fuel corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay for climate damages, the provision of climate finance for lower-income nations, and advancing a globally just transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy, with equitable health and economic benefits for workers and communities.
